"ITCH! is about what we choose to share with the outside world and what we prefer to keep to ourselves. The choices we make sometimes cause a struggle that itches on the inside. This itchy feeling literally comes out to the surface and challenges the dancer in a virtual duet with video images. As a human being, he is caught in a struggle between his own wishes and longings and those of the outside world: of society, of family, of religion, of culture."

After Aafke de Jong graduated from Rotterdam Dance Academy (now called Codarts) she “escaped” to Bali to look for a new way of dancing and living. Today, her work reflects this experience. Dutch-Indian writer Alfred Birney defined her choreographic work as “chameleonic”: At some times, she shows a preference for detailed and stylistic movements borrowed from Balinese dance, while at other times she looks more to her own imagination and gets inspired by other people, (social) science or books that interest her. Aafke is fascinated by the curves and craters of our human brain, literally and metaphorically spoken. She likes to drag dance out of its pure abstraction and to communicate in an associative way. To do so, she especially enjoys working with artists of other disciplines, as this is not only food for inspiration, but also broadens her view to the world and her way of looking at her own dance work.
